Some Irish skiffingtons

Some Irish-American Obituaries A random collection of old Irish-American obituaries from Massachusetts and Rhode Island Skip to content • HOME • ABOUT TAG ARCHIVES: SKIFFINGTON Skiffington, Patrick (Woonsocket, RI) Leave a reply [Irish World and American Industrial Liberator (New York), 7 January 1899] Woonsocket.—Patrick Skiffington, an old resident of this city, died after a week’s sickness Dec. 23, at the Woonsocket Hospital of a complication of diseases. Mr. Skiffington was 55 years of age. Deceased was born in County Leitrim, Ireland, and came to this country in the Fall of 1864. Mr. Skiffington worked for the city, in whose employ he was up to the time of his death. He was a devout Catholic and a faithful member of the Sacred Heart Church. Mr. Skiffington’s mother died some two years ago at the age of 102. Deceased was never married. The following is related: [Irish World and American Industrial Liberator (New York), 18 April 1896] Mrs. Mary Skiffington, 25 Oak street, Woonsocket, celebrated her 101st birthday Easter Monday. In the evening a number of friends called on her and presented the venerable woman with tokens of esteem. Her maiden name, she says, was Mary Mulvanity. She was born in 1795 in the parish of Hallonawank, Township of Ballomore, County Leitrim, Ireland. When about 25 she married John Skiffington. Seven children—five daughters and two sons—were born to them. In the Fall of 1863 the girls had earned enough money to pay the expenses of the rest of the family, including their father and mother, and so they sailed from Ireland to this country. Mr. Skiffington died fifteen years ago. Three of the couple’s children are living—Mrs. Mary Doherty, who lives with her mother; Patrick Skiffington, who also lives there, and Mrs. Ann Hope [?] of Cambridgeport, Mass. Three daughters and a son have died. She has three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
